Scientific publication: What’s wrong with Science | The Economist
BLUNT criticism is an essential part of science, for it is how bad ideas are winnowed from good ones. So when Randy Schekman, one of the 2013 crop of Nobel prize-winners (for physiology or medicine, in his case), decided to criticise the way scientific journals are run, he did not hold back.

冒頭のwinnow。あまり聞きなれませんね。意味は他動詞で第一義に「〈穀物を〉（籾殻やごみなどから）あおぎわける」とあります。ここから転じて「（良い部分を）選び出す、抜き出す」という意味になりました（『新英和』研究社）。さらにfromと共起して「〈真意・善悪などを〉識別する、吟味する」となります(ibid.)。

LDOCEの定義はそこまで詳しくないものの的確で"to make list, group, or quantity smaller by getting rid of the things that you do not need or want"とあります。ずいぶんすっきりしていますね。もはや籾殻に関する表記はなし。量ということを考慮するとwhittle downというPVが同義語であるようです。

一方ODEですと、第二義に"remove (people or things) from a group until only the best ones are left"と定義されています。こちらはやや質的で客観的に記述されています。

辞書も性格が出ますので、いろいろ見てみると面白いですよ。
