sweep

本日２回目の投稿。The Guardianから。スーパーで売っているSushiの調査です。個人的にはNUDO一択なのですが、ちょっと試してみようかな、とそんな気持ちにさせられます。

さて、赤字のdo a sweepに注目します。他動詞sweepおよび自動詞sweepは「掃く」「掃除する」という意味で日常で使われています。でも今回は名詞。どんな意味になるのでしょうか。調べてみると「全域捜査」という訳語がありました（『リーダーズ英和』）。さらに定義を調べてみると"a search or attack that moves over a large area"とあります（LDOCE)。これを踏まえると「いつもの全国展開するスーパーの調査を実施した」と訳出することが可能です。

sweepは他にもいっぱい意味があるので、ちょっと辞書を読んでみると面白いですよ。あっ、あと最後の(青字）のhigh streetの意味は結構取り違える人が多いのでご注意を。
